"I have lived a nightmare like life to show others the way not to think or act that would very quickly lead to a nightmare like life.
-Chantal Thomas
THE PROBLEM
Suicide is the 2nd (3rd in the U.S.) leading cause of death among 15 to 24 year olds.
And for every young person who dies by suicide there are so many other peoples lives that are greatly affected.
Some of the most common risk factors of suicide among youth include:
- Mental Illness
- Drug & Alcohol Abuse
- Sexual and Physical Abuse
- Family History of Suicide
Chantal Thomas faced a number of these risk factors and because of her inability to get the help that she needed to overcome them, she chose to end her life at the age of 18.
THE SOLUTION
The Truth About Teenage Suicide is a powerful documentary that takes viewers deep into the troubled life of Chantal Thomas through pictures, videos, artwork and poetry left behind by her and includes interviews by family, freinds, industry experts, and suicide survivors. Showing how someone who seems to have it all would end up having thier entire lives come crashing down on them.
The Truth About Teenage Suicide is being produced to be shown in schools and in communitites in order to connect with today's youth and thier parents to:
- Minimize the taboo of such topics as Suicide, Mental Illness, Sexual and Physical Abuse, Substance Abuse, Bullying and Homosexuality, so that people are more willing to talk about it with others and realize the importance of getting help when it is needed
- Educate viewers on how to recognize the signs of someone who is suicidal
- Understand the steps to prevent suicide and the resources that are available to them
- Illustrate the affect we have on the people around us and the choices we make (positives and negatives)
- Show viewers that we all go through difficult times and that things will get better once we are able to deal with them properly
- Allow viewers to appreciate life and the people around them
- Illustrate the importance of living a happy, healthy and fulfilling life
THE PLAN
- Develop
In order to further develop this project to its full potential we are seeking partnerships and supporters
- Produce
Produce the most powerful and effective film to have ever been created about suicide and how it can be prevented
- Present
Promote, Distribute and Present to individual people, service providers, schools and communities across Canada and around the world
Each year we lose thousands of people due to suicide, yet there currently is no national campaign against suicide. Help support me in my fight against teenage suicide contact James Thomas james@wordisout.ca
